The Hare and The Tortoise

A Hare having ridiculed the slow movements of a Tortoise, was challenged by the latter to run a race, a Fox to go to the goal and be the judge. They got off well together, the hare at the top of her speed, the Tortoise, who had no other intention than making his antagonist exert herself, going very leisurely. After sauntering along for some time he discovered the Hare by the wayside, apparently asleep, and seeing a chance to win pushed on as fast as he could, arriving at the goal hours afterward, suffering from extreme fatigue and claiming the victory.

"Not so," said the Fox; "the Hare was here long ago, and went back to cheer you on your way."

The reversal of this story is funny. However, I see quite a few run-on sentences (They got off well together, the hare at the top of her speed, the Tortoise, who had no other intention than making his antagonist exert herself, going very leisurely") which are difficult to follow. Also, verbs that end in "ing" tend to be weak (and seeing a chance to win pushed on as fast as he could, arriving at the goal hours afterward, suffering from extreme fatigue and claiming the victory.") Good idea for a story, however. I like it. =)

The “The Hate and the Tortoise” is a good fable that teach us about the different abilities and how you can do everything that you want, you only need to be perseverant and constant in your life. Life is a mix of personalities: People like a tortoise always want to be careful with all the steps that they do it in their life. Others like a hate always like the things fast, but they are arrogant and they feel that they are more than the others. This is a good story to learn about the life but it is for children and adult too.

I really admire the way some of the expert comments aim to help Ambrose Bierce the amateur fledgling become a better writer in the future.

"Try putting more time into it next time"

well said. Bravo.

(by the way, Mr Bierce has been dead since 1914)

I tink this is a really funny and itrusting story. Is hard to understand it because are some words hard to understand. Is a good fable that teach us about the different abilities, specialise the kids. Something that make me laught were when after sautering along for some time he descovered the hare by the way side. The best thing of this short story is that is for all kind of ages kids and adult.

no offence to those who did not get it...but how the hell can you not understand all of this??? ...and what words are there that are considered hard??? ...i believe that you should all do more serious reading and that typing in slang, is a crucial offence to English.

There is something missing in this story...
When I started to read it I thought that there would be something unusual, something that would make the story very clever....but, at the end, i got completely disappointed... Trivial!!!

This is a funny fable. It tells us more about our lives. In fact, some of us live like the hare. They run fast and smart, but they sometimes too pride and too confidential, sometimes look light others. Parts of us do things randomly like a fox, cheating is nothing for them. More people like tortoise. They work hard and diligently but aren’t smart. They often forget to raise their head and see far away. They are interfered by others easily.

The hare and the tortoise; humorous reversal of Aesop fable was written by Ambrose Bierce in June, 2001. There are no summurized Moral on the website.

So, I think, this fables moral is
"Be a smarter, faster and stronger peron for love another people."

I think, the Tortoise represent such a greedy ans selfish people. He try to get his goal so hardly, but for what? Success? Money? Power? Whats next? There are no love.

The Hare want to cheer The Tortoise up. Because, he(or she) has love in his(or her) mind. That point is best moral in this fable, I think. So, I love this fable.

It also really does grab the attention of the reader. The author did such a amazing job doing this book,... it also teaches you a lesson. I dont read anyone addressing the role of the fox. My take is the tortoise is in the lead and winning while the hare is fast asleep, but when the tortoise gets to the finish line the FOX tells him "falsely" the hare has already been there and back.
Thus, the sly fox ruins the tortoises elation and quite possibly he never finishes the race neither. The sneaky fox destroys the whole idea of the overused fable with his own calculated twist.

Hi. I think this story tells of the hares change of heart. He started out mean and selfish with intentions of belittling the tortise. But thanks to the tortises bravery, not only did he finish a hard race, He turned a wicked hare from his prideful ways. What a thoughtful and fantastic twist.

I think this story is good because it shows another point of the traditional fable "The Tortoise and the Hare". It is also funny and there another animal in the story, the fox.The hare was selfish at first, but then it was humble trying to cheer the tortoise. By Juan .

Hmm. I believe that this story is changed to reveal an alternate purpose for this fable. It was a story of triumph in which the humble tortoise defeats the prideful hare; however, our focus is elsewhere when the introduction of a sadistic character, the fox, is created. We see that the hare is "apparently asleep," which implies that the tortoise merely speculated that since the hare wasnt moving, then obviously she was asleep. But by looking at the evil intent of the fox (and what they typically eat), we see that he is either trying to destroy the tortoises sense of accomplishment by lying, or he is covering up the fact that the hare wasnt asleep but was killed by the fox instead.
You can definitely teach children about how trusting strangers is a "no-no" with this story :)... or it is a story used to interpret how the government deceives the lower class (tortoise - they survive) and crushes the middle class (rabbit - dead on the side of the road) in whom they typically love to devour...

Oh my, I went there...
