Judith by Terry Cavanagh and Stephen Lavelle | | The graphics are straight out of the early nineties, recalling the tunnel exploration of Doom and its descendants - but this inventive piece turns this to its advantage as part of the unsettling atmosphere it creates.
It starts midway through an affair as you go to meet your girlfriend Judith at an abandoned castle. From there it expands on the story of Bluebeard, a grisly fairy tale written by Charles Perrault in the late 1600s.
The narrative is fairly linear - the interaction comes as you explore the castle across two time periods, playing two different roles. Brief cut scenes with written dialogue and simple, effective music combine with the graphics to create an experience that is brilliantly more than the sum of its parts.
